The Duchies of Whetstone

The duchies, inhabited by northern pagans, 'barbarians' as the Romans called them. They were a series of united tribes, ransacking and attacking anything in their path. In 742 AD came the Hafen Conquest where catholic Germans from the region of newly converted Pomerania sailed to the northern lands and conquered the regions. It was met by raids by tribes, instability, cutting trades, religious conflicts and internal wars. The region of Hafen (Angel Pine) was integrated into the HRE in the mid 900's. After requesting support from the emperor and the HRE states declared war on the Norse. The HRE states dispatched armies towards these lands, liberating the tribes, force into integrating into the German culture and the catholic religion. The Western Region was inhabited by deserted cultures from France, England and various others while the East was inhabited by the Pomeranias and the Saxons culture. The western duchies inhabited around the tallest mountain in the region. It was rich in mining, trade and farming. The duchies spread their culture across the rest of the region where catholic warriors are glorified, respected and treated like nobles. The religion was not a joke, even giving more serious punishments than the Papal States themselves. The early 900's settlers called the island "Neues Rome" (Northern Rome) as it contained the various cultures in the region, the beautiful and highly populated cities and the powerful kings and queens in the area.

Koinsberg
Koinsberg is the second European settlement to exist in the region, it was assembled by migrants from Wales and England to escape the chaos occurring in their homeland. The city was involved in only one war in it's whole history which was the Prinz-Pfiel war to establish a safer trade route along with getting border connection with Prinz. The city's power was earned after it was first used as a trade-post between Hafen and any other Northern state. However, with it's power increasing it managed to construct a port which boosted their trade and decreased Hafen's importantce and decreased the distance that any state had to cross to export it's products. The city boomed with trade and soon became a regional power with mining and trade.

Hafen
The first European city on the island, it was established by Saxons at first, but was soon filled with English people. The city was first used as a main trade post of the island and the only connection to the outside world as it was the only region to contain large enough ships to support the journey. However, this was soon to end. The rest of the states managed to construct their own ships, ports and trade routes. The city of Hafen soon collapsed as it's residents migrated to the rich Koinsberg to the north-east.

Prinz
Prinz, the far northern kingdom, it's first settlers were the ethnic Norse pagans who settled the are in early 7th century. Prinz was conquered by the Saxons in 892 AD, the region shares borders with many powerhouses in the region like Koinsberg and Leistang. The region is considered the fourth strongest powerhouse in the region with it falling right behind Hafen in regional and trade power. Prinz has fallen into a large number of conflicts in the past, including one with Pfiel, Leistang and the Norse. Prinz is currently the main producer of wood in the whole region, with it's durable and light wood in it's forests.

Leistang
The second strongest power house in the region. It contains the largest amount of farms and is currently the highest producer of wheat, meat, chicken and similar supplies. It has the most mysterious city in the region with a part of it's city engraved into a nearby mountain which raised eyebrows of other duchies. It is rumored that Leistang was once home to the devil himself, however it isn't proven. The only war that the duchy was involved in was Prinz-Pfiel war as an ally to Prinz. They manged to capture Pfiel's bank of the river with only a small lake left as their capital. They are mostly neutral nowadays with more focus on their exports rather then war.

Nordlich and Ruften
Nordlich and Ruften are brother states, however each one belongs to it's own set of traditions and cultures. Nordlich falls under Western culture with it having French, English and Dutch culture in it's duchy. However, on the other side, the duchy of Ruften contains Germanic, Saxon and Slavic culture. Both duchies have been fighting for decades for control over the Osten Bridge. In total, 5 wars have been fought by both sides over the bridge in the past 30 years. The bridge provides an alternate connection to Hafen and Koinsberg if you don't wish to risk a Norse raid on your caravan.

Arzburg
Arzburg, the beauty and glory of the north. The land was inhabited by ethnic Norse who would be met by the Germans in 841 AD following the Pomeranian campagain. The Germans thought of them as 'heretics' and 'uncivilized'. They found themselves being attacked at their own town which became the city of 'Hafen'. The norse were pushed out of it and towards Arzburg which was inhabited by deserted Germans from the town of Koinsberg. It was soon to become a settlement, distant from diplomacy and trade with it's unique architecture and art. It's for those seeking the simple life or hunting.

Pfiel
Pfiel, the weakest house in the region. Lost 90% of it's lands in conflicts, even it's own river that connects them with the outside world. With their terrain giving them 0 advantage to trade nor resources. Following a short civil war between two dynasties, both resort to a split. They however united once more under one banner following the Pfiel - Prinz war of 912 AD. The war caused Pfiel to lost it's border with Koinsberg, completely leaving it devastated. Over the years it earned titles like 'The Sick Man of New Rome.' or 'No-man's land'.
