Saga of Ragnarök, the Twilight of the Gods
A three-year Winter with no Summers in between comes, men start fighting each other and taboos are broken, kinship is forgotten, and morality is gone, this is the beginning of the end. The great wolves, Skoll and Hati swallow the Sun and the Moon, the stars fall from the heavens. Meanwhile, the dragon Nidhogg eats away the root of Yggdrasill that supports Niflheim. Loki, he escapes from his prison, and leads the giants along with his monstrosities against gods as well as men. Fenrir wolf breaks free of the mighty chains that hold him, as Jormungand, the Midgard Serpent escapes his confinement in the sea. The red rooster Fjalar warns the Giants that Ragnarok has begun. In Niflheim another rooster warns the dead, and in Asgard, the rooster Gullinkambi warns the gods. The Frost Giants sail to Vigrid, the site of the Final War, from Jotunheim, aboard the Naglfar. While the Fire Giants depart Muspelheim, led by Surtr, wielding a flaming sword that burns hotter and brighter than a thousand suns. Heimdall blows the Gjhallahorn with all his might, the sound of doom is heard across Asgard, signaling the advent of Ragnarok.
The Gods and the slain heroes, the Einherjar of Valhalla arm themselves to fight a hopeless war. Vigrid becomes a cataclysmic battlefield. The unarmed Freyr is the first to fall, as he is powerless against Surt's flaming sword. Tyr kills the hellhound Garm, but his wounds are grave, and he dies shortly after. Loki and Heimdall, evenly matched, they kill each other. Thor smashes the Midgard Serpent to death with his mighty hammer Mjolnir, Thor eventually succumbs to the serpent's venom. Odin, with his spear Gungnir, battles Fenrir for a long time, only to end up being devoured by the giant wolf. Vidar in a frenzied rage, avenges his father, Odin, by tearing the wolf's jaws with his bare hands. Then, Surt, with his burning sword, flings fire in every direction, Yggdrasill and all the Nine Worlds burn, Gods, men, giants and dwarves, all perish, as the world sinks into the sea
in a futile attempt to avoid the burning death.
A New World rises from the sea, green and fertile, with a new Sun, Vili, Vidar and Vali, and the two sons of Thor, Modi and Magni are the only survivors of that terrible war. Baldur, the god of light with his blind brother, Hod are reborn. Two mortals, Lif and Lifthrasir escaped the catastrophe; and they will repopulate the world. A New Era arrives, where everyone and everything will know eternal peace. A Paradise on Earth.
